Gallery of Cats
The African serval is a wild cat originating from the African grasslands and marshes.
They are approximately thirty to forty pounds at adulthood. They normally hunt and feed
on small game such as birds and small mammals. They are one of the few wild cats that
have adapted well to captivity. With the understanding of feline genetics and trial
breeding of the African serval and domestic cats, a very few number of cat breeders
were finally successful in creating the savannah cat. Female savannahs of early
generations can carry on the serval traits to their offspring. Male savannahs are not
fertile often times until the fifth generation down from their serval ancestor. Female
savannahs are bred to other selected purebred cats such as the Egyptian Mau; Bengal;
or Oriental Shorthair to pass on the desired traits of the serval. Female savannahs can
also be bred successfully to savannah males of fifth or later generations down from their
serval ancestor.
